Usually, the best way to rank highly in Google and other major search engines is to have as many sites as possible link back to your website and ensure that most of them link to your site using the keywords you want to rank for in the search engines.

One of the main criteria Google and others use to rank websites is by measuring how much Trust a website is perceived to have within its’ particular niche.

Links provides them with the data to measure that trust. The other criteria Google uses in ranking is the authority and relevancy of a website.

One good indicator of this is always the text (known as anchor text) used by other sites to link to the site in question. So also is the content sorrounding the link text.

So if a site is about ‘dog training for mums’ and another site uses the same or very similar keywords to link to that site, it clearly suggests that the site is trully about ‘dog training for mums’. Even more so where the sorrounding text goes on to explain what ‘dog training for mums’ is about.

This type of linking passes authority to the site being linked to. Where the linking site itself is a high authority and high popularity site, the value of the link is even higher.

Another good indicator of the relevancy and authority of a site is the rate at which it picks up links. If a site maintains a steady growth rate of links each month, then it suggests more and more sites continue to find its content relevant.

On the other hand, if a site suddenly appears with a whole chunk of links without any prior consistent link growth pattern, then that site is likely to be red-flagged by Google and penalised for artificially growing links. So when it comes to submitting our articles to the directories or social bookmarking our pages or using any other method to build our links, we need to exercise restraint and do it gradually.

Hot Tip: About 8 links a day pointing to different pages on our site and using different keywords or anchor texts is more likely to appear natural link building to the search engines.

That being said, for us to be able to occupy the top half of Google first page for our targetted keywords we must consistently and naturally build links mostly from high authority and popular high page rank websites within our niche.

An effective method of link building every website owner should perform is RSS Feed Syndication.

In case you are not yet familiar with this, an rss feed is a list of published content on your website that visitors can subscribe to and be automatically notified on their desktop each time there is new content for them to check out on your site. This ensures that your visitors keep returning to read your fresh content.

Other websites can equally display your rss feed on their site as a way of providing fresh content for their visitors. This is the real advantage of rss feeds as each time another website displays your feed they create one -way backlinks to your site.

However, rather than wait for other webmasters to gradually link to your feed,  you can mass distribute your feeds throughout the internet through websites known as rss aggregators. RSS Aggregator Sites are highly trafficked and high page rank websites that many other websites go to for rss feed content for their sites.

So the idea is to distribute your feed to as many of these rss aggregator sites as possible for optimal backlink generation.
