Learn Effective SEO Search Engine Optimization Strategies

Search Engines (closely tailed by Social Network Traffic) is the number source of traffic on the internet. The ability to be found in the Search Engines should therefore be a key objective of your Website Promotion efforts. Better still your promotion efforts should aim at securing the highest position possible for your targetted keywords in the Search Engines (more about targeted keywords later).

Businesses spend 1000′s of dollars on securing good web design only to find that their new website is nowhere to be found in Search Engines or is simply buried under a pile of other competing sites. Search Engine Optimization Strategies are therefore designed to take a site faced with such obscurity to the top of the Search Engine results page (SERPs).

In this case, we are refering to Organic Search Results where ranking is achieved naturally as opposed to paid search results like Google Adwords that appear highlighted at the very top of result pages and in a column on the far right (which we talk about elsewhere on this site).

Some think Search Engine Optimisation Strategy should simply be about pleasing the search engines. However, we rather think that all SEO Strategies should be about making a site and its content highly relevant and readable for internet users who rely on the Search Engines to find the content they need.

In other words, the Search Engines are not the ‘end’ but the ‘means to the end. So if we seek to please them then we need to do so only in the expectation that we will thereby please the internet users who depend upon the Search Engines for reliable content. For me this is the defining philosophy that seperates true SEO from search engine spamming and will keep you out of trouble.

Let us now consider some of the known ways search engines collect information and see how we can utilise this to better prepare our site.

We will concentrate here on on-site SEO optimisation (what we can do on our site to improve our search engine position) as opposed to off-site SEO optimization (what we can do outside our site that can also help ).

Search Engines use special programs known as robots or spiders which crawl websites and retrieve copies of files found on those sites. In doing so they ignore all graphics (so it doesn’t matter how beautiful a site looks); they read only text and follow all links on the site. These information is then processed for inclusion into their database ready to be delivered to search engines users searching for information.

Thus when a search engine robot visits our site, it is looking to collect the most relevant and useful information to meet the demand of search engine users. Further it looks in certain places of our site to determine whether such relevant information exists.

Once we know these, then it becomes clear that the object of our SEO is to ensure that our site carries relevant information and which information are presented in a manner to ensure that they are easily found.

So let us Remember that our site is concerned with a particular Niche (specialised subject area) and there are certain Keywords for that Niche our potential visitors will use in Search Engines to find sites like ours. The presence of such Keywords in particular places within our site as well as their quantity in relation to other content (keyword density) will give search engines a good clue as to the presence of relevant content on our site.

The first place a search engine will look to see if relevant information exist on our site is the Keyword contained in our domain name. So our first priority is to choose the right domain name for our website.

Next, the Search Engine robot will check the source codes of our web page at the very top looking for the page title and site description. Of all the contents in the top part of the source codes (i.e the head tag), these two are by far the most important parts the Search Engines take into account. Infact, every site listed in the Search Engine Results Page are listed by their title and description.

Once the robot leaves the head section, it looks for our site heading which are normally found towards the top of web pages in very big bold characters (contained within H1 or H2 tags just like the heading of the current page your are reading).

We should also bear in mind that because robots read our web pages from left to right much like the human eye, there is usually a tendency for them to first read the top left part of your web page before getting to our page heading. So we need to make sure we place some of our important Keywords in that top left hand corner above the list of site contents as well as sprinkle them within the site contents lists (look at the top left corner of this page for an example).

The next thing we should do is make sure our Keywords are used in reasonable quantity throughout the site (about 5 to 7% *Keyword Density) and are spaced out within our content which should be unique (duplicate and outdated content have no place in SEO Strategy).

Our Keywords should occur naturally as part of readable content. This means we should take care to avoid Keyword spamming (which is deliberately repeating keywords in sentences just to target search engines without adding any real value to the sentence structure).

We can also make use of our Keywords in naming our site files, tables, images, describing ALT and Title attribute of images and for the texts of our links. This will help increase our *Keyword Density, which is the number of times our Keyword appears on a web page or website in percentage terms compared to the total number of words on that page or site.

Organic Search Engine Optimization is an ongoing process which is carried out on a regular basis (either daily, weekly or monthly) to maintain a site’s top ranking position. Just imagine you are in a race with your competitors, if you are ahead and you stop running, they simply overtake you.

Since it also works the other way round, the good news is that as a beginner you have the opportunity to catch up and overtake those competitors who have gone to sleep and become complacent as a result of their success.

Since Effective Search Engine Optimisation is what we do to make Search Engines find our site and most importantly find our relevant content, Internet Article Marketing is regarded as the best example of off-site SEO, which is optimisation occuring outside the site but having direct positive impact on our site by means of bringing in web traffic.
